Ziegler designer rugs are sometimes called Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs.
A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs in 1883.
Using designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. succeeded in creating a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Iran.
Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of Sultanabad design, their colors using vegetable dyes and a simple yet striking pattern work well with modern neutral color palettes and contemporary or traditional furniture.
The weaving of Zeigler carpets began in the province of Arak, however, they are now made throughout the Persian region. Most new Ziegler models are made in Afghanistan and labeled Chobi (which translates in Farsi to wood, a reference to their natural color created by vegetable dye). Just like cola being called coke, regardless of brand.
Ziegler rugs are known as Ziegler even though they are not made by Ziegler & Co. Similar to Khal Mohammadi rugs, Zeiglers reintroduced vegetable dyes into Persian and Oriental weaving after the popular use of chemical dyes since the beginning of the 20th century. Although their knot count is usually not high (about 80-120 KPSI), the hand-spun Ghazni or Himalayan wool used is of high quality and very durable in structure.
Ziegler rugs are probably the most popular and sought after handmade rugs in the UK due to their soft tones and harmonious patterns.
There aren't many rooms that wouldn't be enhanced by a Ziegler rug.
