Object description :

"Woodblock Japanese Warlord Samurai "
This print represents the fight of uesagi kenshin against takeda shingen during the battle of kawanakajima. It evokes especially the 4th battle of 1561, which opposed Takeda shingen (December 1, 1521 - May 13, 1573, he was the lord of the kingdom of Kai and Shinano during the period of the civil wars commonly called the Segoku period. ) to Uesagi kenshin (February 18, 1530-April 19, 1578, he is considered as one of the finest strategists of that time). They faced each other during this battle, Uesagi attacked by surprise takeda shingen who could only parry with his gunbai the blade, he was only wounded... The third character is a lieutenant of Takeda Shingen who is Kansuke Yamamoto (1505 - October 18, 1561), although he is one-eyed and lame, he is an excellent fighter and a great strategist (he had won victories over Takeda Shingen during all this battle). He died in this battle when he threw himself into battle against Uesagi Kenshin's army because he believed that his battle plan would defeat Takeda Shingen.
This print is a theatrical representation of this battle and so for each warlord, an artist name is given.
So, Takeda Shingen on the left is played by Nakamura Shinkan VIII , Uesagi Kenshin is played by Bndo Miko Sabaro and Kansuke Yamamoto is played by Kikujiro Onoe .
This print was made 1876 .

Toyohara Kunichika is the pupil of Toyohara Chikanobu, he is a great artist of ukiyoe and he was very famous for his work for artist's prints. He was the man of two intertwined eras and died in Tokyo.
On his tombstone is inscribed the following epitaph:
"As I am tired of painting portraits of the people of this world, I will paint portraits of the king of hell and demons.
