Punuk (?) culture, Alaska ca. 800 - 1400 AD
Fossilised marine ivory
Length : 14,5 cm
An astonishing pair of goggles where neither the eye slits nor the side perforations were made. The inside of the eye sockets had begun to be hollowed out, as well as the notch for the nose.
These goggles, characteristic of the Far North, were used to reduce the intensity of the sun's rays and to protect the retina from glare and reverberations on the snow and ice.
