Object description :

"6 Japanese Glass Prints 47 Ronin Samurai "
These two triptychs represent the famous 47 ronins who are preparing to attack the Moronao house to avenge their daimyo Asano who was forced to commit seppuku because of Moronao. All the names of the different ronins are written at the top.
It is a musha print of the military type and not of the kabuki type linked to the theatre.
These six prints were made between 1847-1848.

Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861) , 歌川国芳 ,Son of a silk dyer, he was born in 1797 under the name Yoshizo. In his youth, he probably assisted his father, providing designs for the dyeing pieces, and thus naturally turned to the world of art .He was accepted as a student by Toyokuni Utagawa in 1814. Later, he founded his own school and his drawings became popular. famous for his prints of actors and animals (especially cats which he adored), he owes his inspiration to legends, to the fantastic, poetic and warlike universe of which one finds a strong influence in his work. He is the author of 10000 prints and of several series. The great earthquake of 1855, after which, returning home late, he was given up for dead by his family and the members of his workshop, marked the end of his great period. Suffering from illness and depression, he produced little from then on. He died in Edo in 1861.
