Object description :

"XVIIIth Crib Santon"
This polychrome santon from the end of the 18th century has a terracotta head with glass eyes, the hands look like crumbs of bread or raw clay and the feet are made of wood. the whole is coated and pleasantly painted, the details of the face give it a lot of realism. as for the body, it is composed of a wooden frame covered with coiled string, dressed in a pretty dress embroidered with silver and gold threads. to note: lack of fingers on the hands and small impacts and small lack of coating.

The santons appear for the first time in Italy and are called "Santi Belli". the first to arrive in provence (the santoum in provençal means "little saint") they appeared according to circulation, traditions, they were first made in breadcrumbs before being made in raw clay, then in terracotta. they finally impose themselves thanks to jean-louis LAGNEL (1764-1822). This santon maker was inspired by his close Neapolitan neighbors to shape the santons that have become essential models.
