"Macaque Family By Paul Friedrich Meyerheim (german 1842 -1915)"
This masterfully animalisttic painting with a family of monkeys was executed by the famous German painter and graphic designer Paul Friedrich Meyerheim (1842 - Berlin - 1915). At the beginning of his artistic career, Paul Meyerheim traveled to Paris and Barbizon several times to perfect his landscape painting.
His particular talent lies in the representation of animals. He also made a name for himself as a portrait painter and succeeded as an illustrator with his woodcuts and lithographs. Meyerheim (along with his brother) received his first artistic lessons from his father. From 1857 to 1860, Meyerheim attended the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. There he also visited the studio of animal painter Teutwart Schmitson, whose painting influenced him greatly. Later, he undertook several study trips to Switzerland, Belgium and Holland and stayed in Paris for a year. He then returned to Berlin where, from 1883, he directed the class of animal painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. At the beginning of 1883, Meyerheim was also appointed professor[1] and in 1900 he became a member of the Senate of the Academy of Arts.
