"Apothecary's Pot In Hand-painted Earthenware, 19th Century"
Nice earthenware apothecary jar decorated by hand with bouquets of flowers and a golden cartouche bearing the words "Dictam Cret:". The lid has the same decoration of painted flowers and golden nets. Note some traces of faience on the pot.
The Dictam of Crete is a perennial plant that grows wild on the mountains of Crete and has antiseptic properties.
It is still used in Greece as an infusion for colds, oral and dental infections, digestive problems, menorrhea, diabetes, obesity, kidney and liver problems. It is also applied as a poultice for headaches, rheumatism and on wounds.
