"Salomon Adler (1630-1709)"
Salomon Adler (Gdansk, Poland 1630 - Milan 1709) "Self-Portrait with Lute" oil on canvas. 119x96 cm The oldest testimony concerning Adler is that of F. M. Tassi, when he wrote that Fra Galgario completed his training under the guidance of a «Monsieur Salomone dell'Herr di Andegavia» who «had at that time gained fame in Milan as an excellent painter». The surname of Adler was attributed to the painter due to the presence of an inscription behind a self-portrait preserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera. Two self-portraits are kept in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and other portraits in Lombard collections. Adler could be identified with the Solomon of Gdansk mentioned in the eighteenth century by the Royal Gallery of Florence as active in Milan at the end of the seventeenth century. His style reveals influences from Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn.
