19th portrait of a gentleman with a hat painted on canvas signed Maury François Born 1861 in Marseille and died 19th French school François Maury was listed in 1876, at the age of 15, at 1 rue des Trois-Mages in Marseille with the profession of painter1. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille where he won the first prizes in painting and drawing in 1880, and the following year the Jules Cantini prize. He continued his artistic training at the Académie Julian in Paris2. From 1885 to 19054, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, of which he became a member, and at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. It is mainly in the landscape and the portrait that he affirms his talent. He painted the landscapes of his native Provence, Savoy and Paris. He enlivens some of his works with joyful scenes, plump women, nymphs or legendary characters reminiscent of the painting of Adolphe Monticelli by whom he is very influenced and whom he admires.
