Very fine work for this sofreh from Iranian Beluchistan, especially in the richly worked borders which contrast with the refined center. Made with two weaving techniques: kilim in the center and soumak, wrapped weft weaving (embroidery) in the borders.
Sofrehs were used as tablecloths or to protect bread. According to their uses, they could be square to keep the bread dough and the bread once cooked. They are called sofreh 'ardi' or 'nanpazi' (nan: bread, pazi: to bake). Larger ones, they are called sofreh 'roukorsi' (stove cover or hearth). Those that acted as tablecloths were long and narrow. Solid and durable kilim. Can be placed on the wall or on the floor.
