"Large Vase With Chimeras From The Art Nouveau Period, Deco Sarah Bernhardt"
Rare Art Nouveau Vase With Chimeras On Its Wrought Iron Base."Impressive ornamental earthenware vase decorated with chimeras.
A rare model and of particular beauty from the art nouveau period, typical of productions from the end of the 19th century responding to the fashion of the mystical, esoteric current of the time.
Indeed certain personalities were fond of fabulous decorations adorned with fantastic animals and monsters, extraordinary objects and shady atmospheres.
Sarah Bernhardt was a high priestess of the genre launching fashion phenomena, but also famous places such as the cabaret "l'enfer" plunged you into supernatural atmospheres. our monumental vase typical of this art nouveau movement is in perfect condition.
the vase itself is in the shape of an amphora , slightly oblong, one could also say ovoid in shape, the ceramic has a beautiful brown glaze with beautiful color gradations, the neck is flared and two enormous chimeras with outstretched wings come nent adorn the perimeter.
these two fantastic birds have mainly a green glaze with many color gradations ranging from yellow to dark green through many colors of green that the photos cannot faithfully reproduce.
the details of these two birds are extremely well done with their outstretched wings, menacing open beaks and sharp talons.
the bottom of their legs seem to be attached by yellow chains that seem to imprison them on this vase.
the chains with curb links are very nicely treated in a triangle retained on the belly of the vase by large studs in relief.
This huge vase rests on its original wrought iron base consisting of a holding crown in which the vase is housed and holding three impressive bird legs between the ostrich and the cassowary.
this tripod is entirely forged and the details of execution reveal the feathers on the hocks and the skin as well as the claws of this type of giant bird. the patina of the wrought iron is superb, almost bronze in color.
the set is in perfect condition, the vase as the base. southern work around 1900, probably a factory in Portugal.
a rare vase of great workmanship, a rather unusual collector's item from art nouveau productions.
