"Old Diving Alley Over The City. Gouache By Gustave-max Stevens."
Superb gouache representing an old alley leading down to the city, offering me a beautiful view overlooking the rooftops. Sensitive and delicate work. The author is a Belgian artist, Gustave-Max Stévens born in 1871 and died in 1946. Pupil of Portaëls in Brussels then of Cormon in Paris. At the age of twenty-four, he took part in the first idealist art salon organized in 1896 by Jean Delville: his art was in fact similar in its beginnings to that of the Pre-Raphaelites and the Roses-Croix. He rallied shortly after to the multicolored visions of Impressionism: flowers, portraits, landscapes of snow sensitive to the fleeting lights of passing time. Very well referenced, the museums of Brussels and Ixelles keep his works. In its original frame of 46 cm x 43 cm. the work alone at sight, 33 cm x 30 cm. I report a very small, insignificant and almost invisible scratch.
