Fine quality, jewel like the early 19th century miniature gouache portrait of Michael Henry Fock 3rd Baron of Robeck in military uniform. He is shown standing in a mountainous landscape wearing the uniform of Cornet of the 7th Hussars. Baron de Robeck is a title of the head of the Irish Fock family which has its origins in Sweden. Jakob Constantin Fock, a Swedish landowner, had bought the Räbäck estate in the parish of Medelplana, county of Skaraborg in the province of Vastergotland and after serving as acting governor there three times, it was created friherre in 1778 by King Gustav III. His son Johan Henrik, after having fought in the American War of Independence, settled in England and was naturalized as a British subject under the name of "John Henry Fock, called Baron de Robeck", by an act of the British Parliament in 1789. John Michael Henry Fock 3rd Baron De Robeck (1790 - 1856) John Michael Henry was the son of John Henry Fock, 2nd Baron de Robeck and Anne Fitz-Patrick. John Henry Fock, 2nd Baron de Robeck (1753-1817) is the model for a painting dated 1791 by George Stubbs (1724-1806) "Portrait of the Baron de Robeck riding a Bay Hunter". John Michael Henry was (value unknown) July 14, 1790. He achieved the rank of Cornet in July 1808 in the 7th Hussars and he is depicted wearing this uniform. He fought in the Peninsular Wars, serving with General Sir John Moore in Spain. He succeeded the 3rd Baron de Robeck on September 22, 1817. His marriage in 1820 to the Hon. Mary Lawless, daughter of Valentine Lawless, 2nd Baron Cloncurry, became a subject of gossip when she divorced to marry Lord Sussex Lennox. He married, secondly, Emily Elizabeth Henry daughter of John Joseph Henry and Lady Emily Elizabeth Fitzgerald in 1830. He held the office of High Sheriff of County Kildare in 1834. He held the office of High Sheriff of County Dublin in 1838. He served as High Sheriff of County Wicklow. He died in October 1856.
