Signed hollow "E.WITTMANN" for Ernest WITTMANN, stamped "GRES MOUGIN NANCY". The brothers Joseph and Pierre MOUGIN, are French ceramists and sculptors. They both exercised their talents at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, right in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period. Ernest WITTMANN (1846 - 1921), is a French painter, sculptor and draftsman. He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and at that time met Victor PROUVÉ who had become his mentor. He is particularly known for his clay statuettes, representing the peasantry of the Vosges and then produced in bronze or sandstone by the MOUGIN brothers.
