Beautiful lithograph of 1906, printed on vellum, monogrammed bottom left Henri Rivière.

This is plate number 7 “The Shower”, from the series La féérie des heures.
Unlike the other plates of the series, here, Henri Rivière breaks with the previous series by choosing a format 24 x 60 cm, inspired by the Japanese Kakemono.

The colors are beautiful, the lithography margins have been cut (see photos) but the bulk of the lithography is preserved. Apart from this minor defect it is in perfect condition.

This Lithograph in 12 colors was edited by Eugène Verneau in Paris.

Henri Riviere (1864 - 1951).

Henri Rivière was born in 1864 in the Montmartre district of Paris. As a young teenager, he decided to become a painter. In 1874 he met Paul Signac, and began to attend the studio of the painter Émile Bin.  
In Montmartre, Henri Rivière discovers the cabaret du Chat Noir, a place that hosts the artistic, social and political «All-Paris», of which he will quickly become one of the creative pillars. He contributed to the reputation of the cabaret by creating shadow theater. For fifteen years, Henri Rivière would stage many of the pieces, the atmosphere of which would be representative of his future work.

His first experiments in engraving date from 1882 with the technique of etching. His admiration for Japanese art will lead him to take an interest in wood engraving, of which he will become a recognized master in both the West and the East.  Everything in Henri Rivière’s work refers to Japan: the treatment of subjects, his signature, the choice of papers, the formats. He also became a great scholar of Japanese art, writing books and collecting many objects most of which are kept in national museums.

His two main subjects were Paris and Brittany.

His meeting with Eugène Verneau was decisive.

This printer willingly opened his workshops to artists and it was there that Henri Rivière discovered lithography. Eugene Verneau went on to accompany him in the culmination of his lithographic work, of which 5 large decorative series were created between 1897 and 1916, and a reference work: Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower.Aspects of Nature, The Magic of the Hours, Parisian landscapes, Le Beau Pays de , Vent de Noroît.
Henri Rivière was a regular printer until the death of Eugène Verneau in 1913.
After that date, Henri Rivière devoted himself to drawing and watercolor.
