Representation of an Apsara in finely chiseled copper alloy
Nepal
20th century
Beautiful figuration of an Apsara represented standing on the semi-flexed left leg, the right leg bent in a dance attitude. She is adorned with a simple dothi draped around the hips, the latter adorned with stylized patterns and a wide fabric falling between the legs. The slender body with graceful sway presents an opulent chest giving the piece a great sensuality. The right arm is bent, detached from the body, palm of the hand in the direction of the sky, the stretched left arm, the hand pointing towards the ground, palm turned outwards. She is adorned with a large necklace adorned with turquoise cabochons and heavy bracelets on her arms, wrists and ankles. The face with great interiority presents almond-shaped eyes with half-closed eyelids surmounted by fine eyebrows treated by incision and framing an aquiline nose overhanging a small mouth with fleshy lips. The forehead presents the third eye, a symbol of knowledge beyond appearances, as well as fine wisps of gracefully arranged hair. The ears with distended lobes are adorned with large circular pendants embellished with turquoise cabochons. A large tiara adorned with five florets adorns the head, the hairstyle brought back into a high bun embellished at the top with a vajra and tied with a thin ribbon. A fine fabric adorned with floral foliage resting on the shoulders and wrapping around the arms like a volute falls in wide, turbulent sections.
