A student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was appointed painter to the Navy in 1921. Paul Morchain would become a regular in Douarnenez and its region. Working in the regionalist movement, he established himself as a major painter in the country of Cornwall. Very influenced by the style and theme of the painters of Pont-Aven, his painting transcribes the atmosphere of local life and the sincerity of genre scenes.
His works can be found in many museums in France, notably in Paris (at the Musée de la Marine), in Bordeaux, Rochefort-sur-Mer and Douarnenez. This oil on wood panel is signed lower right and is presented in a beautiful carved period frame.
The dimensions with the frame: 42.5 x 37 centimeters
