This elegant sofreh, made up of a solid red field (kafzade) abraded*, was made in the region of Kerman, southern Iran. Black zigzag borders are typical of Afchar sofrehs. Small vivid polychrome borders. Interesting format.
*Abraches: change of tones in the same color. Solid and durable kilim. Can be placed on the wall or on the floor.
The afchars are located in the region of Kerman, in Fars (south-western Iran) but also in Khorassan (north-western Iran).
Sofrehs were used as tablecloths or to protect bread. According to their uses, they could be square to keep the bread dough and the bread once cooked. They are called sofreh 'ardi' or 'nanpazi' (nan: bread, pazi: to bake). Larger ones, they are called sofreh 'roukorsi' (stove cover or hearth). Those that acted as tablecloths were long and narrow.
