BIOGRAPHY
Raymond Normand was born on November 14, 1919 in Auby, not far from Douai, died in 2000 in Aix en Provence, buried in Ventabren. he attended high school and the School of Fine Arts in Douai.
However, in 1934, he was forced to interrupt his studies due to a serious bone disease which confined him to bed for two years.
Following his convalescence, he decided to leave high school to devote himself full-time to his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Douai.
Due to their son's health, his parents decide to take him to the south of France. They settled in Marseilles in 1937, and there, until 1941, Raymond took courses in sculpture and drawing at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
During this period, he met César, the famous French sculptor, with whom he remained in contact for many years despite the different directions in which their art evolved.
In 1943, he was sent to Germany to comply with compulsory labor service. Due to his leg problem, he was assigned to work in an office.
After his return to France, he worked for farmers and kept herds of goats in Lambesc, near Salon-de-Provence.
It was at this time that he discovered the natural beauty of Provence, just as Vincent van Gogh had done in Arles.
Following in the footsteps of the Impressionists, he became increasingly keen to capture on canvas the vibrant light and colors that dazzled the aspiring northern painter for the rest of his life.
In 1950, Raymond Normand moved to Ventabren, not far from Aix-en-Provence, in the district known as Trou du Loup, at the bottom of the village, in a small isolated house surrounded by pines and olive trees. He devoted the rest of his years to his art, while living in this peaceful retirement with his parents, cats and goats.
He actually achieved some notoriety, although, living far from the art market, he did not seek fame. Many French and foreign art collectors have come to Trou du Loup.
