Object description :

"Senneh Rug, Persia From The 19th Century, 117 X 187 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool Decorated With Botehs, Normal Wear"
Senneh rug in hand-knotted wool decorated with Boteh over the entire field, measuring 117 cm wide by 187 cm long from the second half of the 19th century. ### This carpet is to be compared in its decoration, its time and its size to the carpet present in the "Cleveland Museum of Art" in Cleveland, USA.
The designs of the Senneh are often decorated with Herati, but also with Boteh (much less common), they are knotted with extreme care and spread over the entire field.
The borders are generally decorated with the Herati motif and sometimes this is transformed into a motif called a turtle, which is the case with our model.
The dominant colors are blue, ivory and black, the red is there to support and brighten up the decorations of stylized flowers and the borders.
The production of Senneh has a lot of resemblance to the carpets of Bidjar or other nomadic regions and is recognized for its quality and its resistance, the knotting is much finer and the designs more refined.
The fame of the Sennehs is due to the quality of its antique carpets made at the time by order of merchants and to the high demand and taste of customers. The use of a cotton weft thread instead of a woolen weft, a shorter shave to obtain a cleaner design (therefore an excellent quality wool), and a density varying between 420,000 to 750,000 knots at square meter are the main features of Senneh rugs.
Senneh's kilims are as renowned as its knotted rugs. Today, since the 1980s, the quality of Sennehs has greatly diminished, and the number of knots has dropped to an average of 200,000 knots per square meter.
In addition, the use of chemical dyes is regular even if the drawings always remain identical.
In a word, a lack of artistic and artisanal quality which made the reputation of the old Sennehs.
Normal wear accompanies this piece. Our model from the 19th century has the advantages of a beautiful collector's rug, its finesse; 4 mm, its unusual decoration both for the field and for the borders, its resemblance to a museum carpet, and a good condition for an old carpet.
Rings are attached to the back of this piece, which has stood on the wall for many years.
### The "boteh" is a Zoroastrian sign of immortality, the most credible hypothesis of its form is the representation of the cypress maynu spentas, it is believed to be associated with the light of the God Ormuzd and the person of Zoroaster.
At his death he is carried to the top of a mountain where he is transformed. Another legend, it would be a cypress of paradise planted by Zoroaster and Kashmar (Turchiz) which would have become the highest in the world.
A symbol from the dawn of time.
### Carpet knotted under the Kadjar dynasty, second half of the 19th century.
The Kadjar dynasty or Kadjars (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar, Persian: قاجار ) is a Turkmen dynasty that ruled Iran from 1786 to 1925.
Dimensions: Width: 117 cm (46") x Length: 187 cm (73") )
This rug has been professionally and environmentally cleaned.
