Iconography: According to tradition, the archetypal type of Our Lady of Vladimir was painted by the Evangelist Luke during the life of Theotokos. According to the chronicle, the icon located in the Tretyakov Gallery was brought to Kiev from Constantinople and was in Russia as early as 1155. The significance of Our Lady of Vladimir as Russia's palladium led to its special popularity among the Russian people and many aftershocks.
Description: The characteristic feature of the icon is the pose of the Mother of God and the Child. The Blessed Mother, who holds the child in her right arm, tenderly bows her head towards him, while the child in turn leans her cheek against that of the mother and holds her neck in such a way that the little hand is visible on the right side. The close bond between mother and child is not reproduced more convincingly in any other type of representation of the Mother of God. The Blessed Mother wears a red-brown scarf (Greek Maphorion). Above her forehead and on her left shoulder are two stylized stars as a sign of Mary's virginity. The Greek abbreviations for "Mother of God" (MP OY) and for Christ the abbreviation for "Jesus Christ" (IC XC) are written at the top left and right. At the height of the Holy Mother's shoulder, it is written in Church Slavonic script: "Venerable Mother of God Vladimirskaya"
Attribution: The presented icon is executed in the so-called tempera painting, was created in the first half of the 19th century.
