"Ornamental Wooden Bolster, Venetian Taste - Nineteenth"
Ornamental bolster made in the Venetian style and representing a black thurifer, in carved wood, on a rocky base. The term thurifer (from the Latin turifer, "bearer of incense") designates an altar server responsible for handling the censer during mass or certain offices of the Catholic, Anglican or Lutheran liturgy. Standing, the right leg resting on a pebble, the subject maintains a thin trunk to lift a small solid walnut tray, circular in shape and molded around its periphery. Because of his assured posture, the man seems proud to accomplish his role. Her cheerful face is tilted upwards in a subtle smile, while her glass eyes gaze warily upwards. The character bears the physical characteristics denoting his African origin, by his complexion consisting of blackened wood and his frizzy hair. These are hidden under a customary cap. The man is dressed in a tunic fitted at the waist with a fringed scarf. This beautiful traditional costume ends with shorts and fine moccasins. From the headdress to the shoes, this natural wood outfit is finely executed with stylized floral decorations. The whole is consolidated on a large tripod base with an irregular surface and three sides forming the heads of griffins, themselves resting on large ball feet. You will appreciate the combination of diligent and careful workmanship, with the warm shades of wood that make up this sculpted and decorative sheath. Naked as if accompanied by an exhibit, this exotic furniture will bring finish and detail to a tropical or daring decoration. ******** Period: 19th century. Excellent condition. Patina finish.
