French school of the 19th century
Signed and dated
Elise Salanson is from the Somme, where she was born in 1843, she is the sister of Eugénie Salanson, woman painter who has won many awards at artists' fairs at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Elise becomes her sister's pupil in Paris, where the latter has settled.
Eugénie was a pupil of great painters, including William Bouguereau and Léon Cogniet.
Our painting presents a still life, on an entablature, cloves of garlic intertwine with apples of different species in front of a glazed stoneware pot in which bay leaves with sauce have been placed. These fruits and plants give the artist the opportunity to show us his work as a colorist and composition, in the style of Dutch still lifes. Eugénie's teaching and her artistic flair allow Elise to produce high quality works.
Provenance: descendant of the artist.
