"Cashmere Indian Espoliné Shawl Circa 1840"
Circa 1840 India for export to the West Beautiful espoline woven Indian cashmere shawl called Rumal. Very fine espoline weaving by crocheting wefts, similar to tapestry stitch. Large central reserve in scarlet red pashmina framed by rows of slanted boteh decorated with Thousand Flowers. Stitched fringes in tapered pashmina on two sides. Some moth holes visible by transparency, without questioning the solidity of this shawl. Black cotton reinforcement strips on two sides allowing it to be hung on the wall and two 5 cm black cotton patches on the back. Good overall condition, color and conservation. Dimensions: 158cm X 158cm.
