Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) was an acclaimed French sculptor and painter who studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under François Jouffroy (1806-1882) and Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900). in 1868 the sculptor won the Prix de Rome, and in 1872 received the Cross of the Legion of Honor and the First Class Medal for the sculpture of David, kept in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Mercié won the highest medals in 1889 and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts and to a professorship at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was also elected Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and in 1913 President of the Society of French Artists. He decorated the tombs of some of the most outstanding personalities of his time: the historian Jules Michelet, the historian Adolphe Thiers, he also created a memorial to commemorate the defense of Châteaudun and a memorial to Jeanne d'Arc.
