"Large Wardrobe With Twisted Columns In Walnut - Switzerland, Basel, Late 17th Century"
Basel twisted column cabinet, late 17th century Solid walnut and veneer on fir frame ------------------------------ Total height : 260 cm (230 + 30 cm of pinnacle, removable) Width: 203 cm (225 at the cornice) Depth: 73 cm (78 at the cornice) ----------------- ------------- Cabinet designed in two bodies assembled with tongue and groove, mounted on a base and topped with a protruding cornice with moldings. It opens with two massive, powerfully paneled doors. Note the pattern of flames on the molding of the panels, which is very closely inspired by the Hungarian point - very fashionable in Europe at the same time. Its facade is punctuated by three twisted columns in sculpted solid walnut, each resting on a high paneled console topped with a Corinthian capital; the two side columns are each pegged to a cabinet body, while the central column is attached to the right door. The entablature is enriched with very beautiful figures of putti and fruit baskets alternately. The top of the cornice is adorned with a turned and carved walnut pinnacle [incomplete]. Original hinges, hinges, key and lock. The root feet are missing. The interior, formerly lined with Toile de Jouy wallpaper, will be fitted out according to the buyer's choice. ----------------------- ------- Bibliography: Stefan Hess, Wolfgang Loescher, Möbel in Basel, Kunst und Handwerk der Schreiner bis 1798, Historisches Museum Basel, 2012.
