"Empire Mantel Clock, Portico Clock In Gilt Bronze "cupid's Blacksmith" Model Jean-simon Deverbe"
Beautiful original portal clock in patinated and gilded bronze. Representation of a winged Cupid operating the forge above with a hammer and the rope of the beater. In front of him is an anvil on a dais. Fire is visible in the forge, and smoke (weathered bronze) rises above. The scene is supported by two caryatids. The clock is between the two. The clock has a gilt bronze plinth at the bottom. The set is supported by four round feet. What is very special is that this clock has a pendulum of arrows and fire, which is in continuous motion while the clock is running. The design of this clock is by Jean-Simon Derberne The movement has an enamel dial signed: “ARMINGAUD LÁÎNÉ À PARIS” (Paris, Rue Meslay, Bd de la Porte Saint-Martin, 1806-1813), with Roman numerals and hands gold plated. The clock has an 8-day spring anchor movement with silk suspension pendulum, striking mechanism every half hour on a small silver bell. The clock and the signature can be found in "French bronze clocks" by Elke Niehuser and in the books La pendule française by Pierre Kjellberg. Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764-1824) was one of the most important Parisian bronzers of the end of the 18th century and the first two decades of the following century. Married to Marie-Louise Veron, he seems to have specialized almost exclusively in the manufacture of clocks, candlesticks and candlesticks decorated with exotic figures. He set up his studio successively rue Barbette in 1800, rue du Temple in 1804 and finally rue des Fossés du Temple between 1812 and 1820. The drawings of his creations are kept in the Cabinet des Estampes of the National Library of Paris. An example is "Cupid's Forge".
