Jean Henri CHOUPPE (1817-1894) Watercolor - Mill near Orléans Signed lower left Dimensions: 35 x 24.5 cm frame: 43 x 32.5 cm Jean Henri Chouppe is a French painter, watercolourist, draftsman and lithographer born in Orléans (Loiret) on January 6, 1817 and died in the same city on March 28, 1894. He opened a workshop at 14 rue d'Illiers and the students began to frequent him. In 1855, he was responsible for providing drawing lessons in high school and received the title of professor in 1857. For 33 years he taught drawing in this high school. As a student of Fleury, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857 with watercolours: view of Saint-Malo, Map of the Old Market in Dinan. He paints exclusively landscapes and devotes himself especially to watercolour. Chouppe's work is considerable, his drawings renowned for their picturesque fidelity and precise graphics are prized by historians and collectors of old Orleans and elsewhere.
