"Annunciation, Bas Relief In Bronze By Francesco Rebesco Around 1930"
Francesco Rebesco was born in northern Italy in San Zenone degli Ezzelini between Venice and Trieste. Coming from a family of craftsmen, deeply Christian, his drawing talents were quickly detected by his teachers. He will follow courses at the school of drawing and sculpture of Bassano. The meeting in 1912 with the Paduan sculptor Ramazzotti will be decisive for Rebesco who from then on will devote himself to this art. During the First World War Rebesco, who had initially been recruited to participate in the construction of the first planes, became a fighter pilot and joined the famous "squadriglia degli aces" squadron. He will continue his military career shortly after the war to return to sculpture in Milan where he will attend from 1922 the Academy of Sacred Art "Beato Angelico". He will therefore devote himself almost exclusively to sacred art and there are many works by Rebesco mainly in Veneto (Commemorative, Funerary, Sacred Art but also some portraits to respond to public and private commissions). Our bronze bas-relief signed lower right comes from a private residence located in Udine. It was probably commissioned from the artist in the 1930s for a small devotional chapel. This Annunciation (the announcement made to Mary of her divine maternity by the angel Gabriel) takes up the classic codes of the genre while integrating the simplification and stylization of the 1930s. Many symbols (the fruit basket, the lily held the angel, the tree and the bird) bring a certain charm to the composition. The cast iron is very beautiful with a high quality carving and patina. To see at the gallery.
