Without knowing the authors for the oldest religious works, the representations of hell and the devil are often present in the sculptures and sometimes stained glass windows of churches and cathedrals for more than a millennium, from the Romanesque period then Gothic, in the Renaissance with Michel Ange until the end of the 19th century with Rodin's Gates of Hell.
The central part is 17th or before surrounded by a sculpted frame from the 2nd half of the 19th century.
The central characters are completely 17th century while those in the frame are in the spirit of 19th century romanticism (position of the woman at the bottom of the frame, facial expressions), the unity is given by the flames running through the entire work.
