From his real name Marin Marie Paul Emmanuel Durand-Couppel de Saint-Front, Marin Marie is best known as a painter of seascapes and the navy. Born in Fougerolles-du-Plessis, in the house of his maternal grandmother, on December 10, 1901, he died on June 11, 1987, in his house in Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët. His childhood was influenced by an artist mother and a father passionate about navigation. From 1925, he embarked on Jean Charcot's Pourquoi pas to perform his military service. From these expeditions, he will bring back sketchbooks that will allow him to create canvases, the beginning of a long career devoted mainly to the seas and oceans and especially to the civil and military ships that crisscross them. Marin Marie was appointed official painter of the navy in 1934 and officer of the Legion of Honor in 1950.
