Henri André MARTIN 19018 - 2004 Oil on canvas landscape around Eygalières 92 cm x 65 cm
Henri André Martin was an excellent painter, we are happy to offer you the high quality of his work and the beauty of these works that we have chosen seriously.
Henri André Martin was born in Lyon in January 1918, he comes from a medical family. From an early age, his passion was painting, but, yielding to family influence, he chose medicine, while knowing how to divide his activity between these two Arts.
... Throughout his career, he was able to combine medicine and painting, to also take a prominent place in this Art, concretized by a book on Van Gogh's disease, published in 1994. His pictorial work is very rich: paintings, serigraphs, lithographs. He was laureate of the Maurice Utrillo Prize in 1964, and medal of honor of the Lyon Society of Fine Arts. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in French and foreign galleries (New York, Frankfurt, Geneva, etc.), as well as in the production of highly bibliographical books: such as the "Bestiary of Insects", the "Lyon de René Deroudille and Jean Albert Carlotti”. He was a corresponding member of the Institut de France.
He will remain in the memory of all, a brilliant surgeon, an esteemed master knowing how to handle with the same elegance: scalpel and brush….
Contemplative but active, he wanted to paint, which was his vocation. A vocation which had been encouraged by Joseph Lamberton, a painter and sculptor from Saint-Etienne, and by Henry Grosjean, who agreed to come and give painting lessons to my father, during the summer, in the Bresse family property of Jasseron.
The artistic environment
Henri André Martin's friends were most often artists. Joseph Lamberton, Henry Grosjean and Pierre Eugène Montézin, Jean Carlotti, Jean Fusaro, André Cottavoz, Jacques Truphémus, among the leaders of the Lyonnaise school exhibited regularly at the Malaval gallery, a gallery which belonged to my father and whose wife Anne -Marie was the director. Let us quote Mario Prassinos and Roland Oudot who painted in Eygalières, Henri de Waroquier, Camille Hilaire, Louis Pons and Michel Ciry. These last two, very close friends with very different personalities, have in turn spent long stays in our house in Eygalières. Joseph Alessandri, our neighbor and Jean Cardot, perpetual secretary of the Institut de France, were the dearest friends, but it would be appropriate to mention many others. The meeting, then the friendship with Jean Souverbie illustrates the personality of my father well.
