"A Fossilized Horse Leg. Equus Sp., Pleistocene, Florida, Usa"
This set of fossil horse bones dates from an extinct equine. The interlocking bones are elegantly presented in a vertical orientation held in place by a black metal frame on a wooden base. The umber-coloured bones, dating back around 40 million years, are well preserved. It's a really interesting specimen, and the ancient leg offers insight into the anatomy of the early ancestor of the modern horse. Smaller than contemporary horses today, which is evident from these fossilized leg bones, Equus lived in herds and became extinct in North America during the late Pleistocene ("Ice Age").
