Object description :

"Religious Sculpture - Christ Door Of Tabernacle - Gilded Polychrome - Le Puy - 17th Century"
Door of the Tabernacle carved with Christ waiting at Calvary – 17th century

Description: This remarkable polychrome sculpture, representing the chained Christ, or “God of Mercy”, represents Jesus in a moment of resigned waiting before his crucifixion.
The character's posture and expression reflect a deep acceptance of his destiny, giving this work a moving spiritual dimension.

Not directly derived from the Gospel stories, this iconography is rooted in a meditative reflection around the Scriptures, and spread widely during the 15th century in Europe, becoming a symbol of Christian devotion.

Period and provenance:
Dating from the 17th century, this piece comes from a former collection of the Musée des Campagnes de St-Didier-en-Velay, and bears an old handwritten label indicating that it would have been recovered during the Revolution of 1789 in Sainte-Claire. du Puy en Velay, Haute-Loire.

Condition and authenticity:
Some gaps on the sculpture and wear on the polychromy and gilding,
which far from diminishing its artistic quality, bear witness to its eventful history, marked by wars and revolutionary repression.

note: also excess volumes of polychromy masking certain details of the sculpture (possibility of considering a small restoration in places)

Dimensions:
- Height: 33 cm
- Width: 16 cm
- Depth: 8 cm
- Weight: 854 g

Ideal for a collection of sacred art, this sculpture could also find its place in a decoration, whether contemporary or classic.
