"Thierry (augustin) - Essay On The History Of The Formation And Progress Of The Third Estate. 1853."
THIERRY (Augustin) - Essay on the history of the formation and progress of the Third Estate. Followed by two fragments of the Collection of unpublished monuments of this history. Paris, Furne and Co., 1853; in-8, frontispiece representing the portrait of the author, XIV-408 pp., bottle green half-calf binding, decorated smooth spine, marbled edges. Augustin Thierry was Saint-Simon's secretary. He uses the original sources to understand History independently of its subjective aspects. After reading Latin chronicles and studying a collection of Anglo-Saxon laws hitherto misunderstood, he published in 1825 a History of the Conquest of England by the Normans, which aroused enthusiasm. In 1835, the Duc d'Orléans offered him the management of his library. At the same time, his protector Guizot entrusted him with the management of major historical publications, from which he drew an Essay on the Third Estate in 1850.
