15th Century Wood Sculpture Saint Catherine Gothic Period

Interesting large polychrome statue representing Saint Catherine of Siena. Carved in a beautiful oak log hollowed out on the back as was practiced at the time (to avoid splits). Dressed in an old-fashioned dress topped with a cape. The Face with features of adolescent grace and a thoughtful, almost meditative expression. She holds in one hand a book "she writes it or a book of sacred theology" and in the other the Lys (doctrine on one side and purity on the other, a dichotomy which is undoubtedly also the key to understanding the greatness of this woman, who shared her life between taking care of the infirm and the sick, particularly dangerous, whom no one wanted to take care of, and on the other hand writing great theological texts, which earned her the title of doctor of the church never given to a woman in front. to finish the statue rests on a small terrace with sides which is in the mass, entirely monoxyle sculpture of the 15th/16th century, bears the marks of time and the recovery consequently, old restorations, several layers of colors and the lily sprig misses in the left hand.
