Pierre OUTIN (1840-1899) "On the Cliff" An oil on canvas Signed and Dated lower right: "OUTIN 78" L: 102 cm x W: 60 cm (SC) L: 115 cm x H: 75 cm ( AC) Bibliography: Son of a wealthy merchant, he studied at the Lycée de Moulins where he learned drawing. Pupil of Lecointe and Cabanel. It is a very gifted student who won first prize in the competition of the School of Fine Arts in 1863 He began at the Salon in 1868. In 1874 n he made a long stay in Algeria. The African land fascinates him, the colors of the cities, the brightness of the streets n the oriental outfits are such a change of scenery, that on his return to France one finds in his paintings a richer and more nuanced palette of colors. He obtained a 3rd class medal in 1881 for: l'Emigré, then a second class with: Episode of the rout of Quiberon in 1889.
