Oil on canvas of a particularly imposing size created for a living room in the Keremma manor in northern Brittany, owned by the Temple de la Croix family (see photo No. 2, painting in the manor).
The Keremma manor was also an artists' residence and the setting that received the works of several creators and friends of J.L. Rivallon: the earthenware painter Michel Bouquet (1807-1890) who also created the decorations for the marine gallery at the Château de Versailles, Jean-Louis Verdier, Marie-Ferdinand de Dartein, known as Fernand de Dartein, and Eugène Lejeune.
This work by Jean Louis Rivallon du Temple de la Croix (1819-1889) is dated 1884 and monogrammed LT.
The artist often monogrammed his paintings with the initials L T after 1880, for Louis du Temple and while he sometimes signed L. du Temple in the first part of his life and sometimes with his full name. His paintings are most often dated and the inscriptions are always in red.
J.L. Rivallon, in addition to being a scientist, engineer and teacher, also had a career as a naval officer and he drew inspiration from his travels around the world to nourish his activity as a painter.
He was an Officer of the Legion of Honor and ended the war of 1870 with the rank of brigadier general at the head of 14,000 sailors of the crews of the French fleet.
Author of several studies on marine machines and author of a book entitled "Communications and Transmissions of Thought" published in 1878.
