A silver mounted rock crystal amulet in the form of a heart.
German, 18th century.
Measures 3.8 x 2.7cm excluding its loose silver bail.
This rare form of amulet was worn to scare away ill fortune particularly from children and mothers, they were referred to as ‘Fright’ or ‘Scare stones’.
The heart shaped piece of rock crystal is mounted in a dogs tooth setting supported by a rope twist frame. The amulet is engraved to each side with a cross or a star burst, possibly a representation of the star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to the newly born Christ.
