A silver gilt and paste pendant with a figure of the God Apollo.

German, late 16th century.

Measures 6.4 x 5.9 x 1cm.

The pendant is modelled on the jewelled, gold and enamel pendants of architectural form, which were highly fashionable with the nobility during the Renaissance period. The present pendant was clearly owned by a an aspirational and fairly wealthy person who’s purse not extend to affording a gold jewel set with precious stones.

The pendant shows signs of old repairs to the reverse and the large paste at the bottom of the pendant has been replaced.
