Provenance: Rome, private collection.
Material: Oil on canvas.
Dimensions: 150x117cm with frame, 120x87cm canvas only.
Description: This antique painting from the French school depicts Louis XV standing. The frame is from the Louis Philippe period but lends itself very well to 'dressing' this beautiful painting, as it is hand carved and gilded with pure gold leaf.
This splendid painting, entitled Louis XV, was undoubtedly created in the atelier of Louis-Michel Van Loo (1707-1771). It is a commissioned and propagandistic work, indeed Louis XV commissioned many similar paintings to give to the French nobility.
In this work the typical characteristics of the king are emphasised: the position and movement of the left arm in the first place, all set within an elegant environmental context. Particularly striking are the coat embellished with gold embroidery, the white silk stockings and the shoes with red heels, very fashionable at the time, as well as the insignia of the orders of the Holy Spirit and the Golden Fleece.
