Fruits Still Life '600

With keen interest I examined this relevant still life (oil paintings on canvas, 72 x 54 cm. without frame and 86 x 60 without) centered on a variegated selection of fruit, which combines a dry naturalism with an essentially simplified display taste, typical of the seventeenth-century Lombard area, always inclined to meager presentations and devoid of embellishments for decorative purposes. In fact, a direct light analyzes the main parameters, arranged at the bottom with an elastic pyramidal grouping and with a grazing light determining suffused chiaroscuro passages. A dark area which is contrasted on the opposite side by the luminous emergence of the fruit, whose containers are marked more by the reverberations of light than by the lines of the contours.

A chronological placement around 1670/80 and territorial between Lombardy and Emilia, probably gravitating to Piacenza, as a lively cultural center, through the influences of the nearby cities from Milan and Brescia to Parma and Mantua, is convincingly relevant and brings us back to the name of Marco Antonio Rizzi (Pralboino 1648 – Montemartino 1723).
