A pioneer of kinetic art, Panagiotis Vassilakis, better known as Takis, created sculptures, performances and sound pieces exploring elements of physics, nature and technology. Among his most famous works are his "signals" - delicate rods topped with lights and other machine parts that move in response to slight vibrations in the surrounding air. Referring to natural and artificial antennae, they seem to commune with their surroundings. Takis also composed haunting musical compositions and used electromagnets to suspend humans and objects in space. Inspired by the technological developments of the Space Race, as well as the principles of Zen Buddhism and ancient philosophy, the artist saw his work as a way to connect with the cosmos and unseen natural forces. Takis has participated in Documenta, the Venice Biennale and the Paris Biennale, Tate Modern, the Palais de Tokyo, the Menil Collection and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. His work has sold for six figurines at auction and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Center Pompidou, and the Tate, among other institutions. Among the leading kinetic artists, Vassilakis Takis has created a pioneering body of sculpture, performance and sound pieces focusing on electromagnetism, a force that has fascinated him since the start of his career. Takis moved to Paris in 1954 and made his first sculpture "Signal" the following year. His best-known series, the "Signals", is composed of delicate and moving rods springing from a solid base and surmounted by various industrial and technological fragments. Referring to natural and artificial antennae, they seem to commune with their surroundings. Magnets are the animating center of his works. He exploited their attraction to suspend humans and objects in space. For Takis, electromagnetism is a unifying force, which passes through all bodies, and which he celebrates in art which - in his words - "binds in space, objects, metals, wandering particles of the cosmos Throughout his career, he has produced antenna-like sculptures he calls Signals and musical devices using magnets, electricity and viewer participation to generate resonant, random sounds. Such inventions won Takis the admiration of the international avant-garde, ranging from American Beat poets to artists such as Marcel Duchamp. This exhibition is organized by the Tate Modern in collaboration with the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens. This is the largest exhibition of Takis' work ever held in the UK, bringing together over 70 works.
