Jean-Baptiste Oudry, born in Paris on March 17, 1686 and died in Beauvais on April 30, 1755, was a French painter and engraver. He is particularly known for his paintings of hunting dogs, animals still alive and exotic animals.
When surprised by the large quantity of his productions, he replied: "I do not go faster than another, but I work more, and often, my palette loaded, I waited until it was day. To save time, Oudry used a dark room for the sketches he was going to make in Saint Germain en Laye, Chantilly, the Bois de Boulogne and the gardens of Arceuil, but he was forced to give it up, having realized that the perspective was not right and that the effects of light and shadow were not those of nature.
Oudry painted portraits, history, hunting, landscapes, animals, fruits, flowers; he imitated bas-reliefs; he did pastels, decoration; he also engraved with etching.
