This snuff box, remarkably carved in relief, testifies to the growth of tobacco craftsmanship in the 18th century.
The appearance of tobacco in Europe in the 16th century aroused unprecedented enthusiasm, and the 17th/18th centuries saw the rise of tobacco consumption, with precious objects like this snuffbox, essential to high society. The careful patina of this piece, resulting from centuries of use, gives it a patina of deep nuances and a unique shine.
Decoration of the first side:
The first side presents a scene of Saint Martin, in military uniform, on his horse and saber in hand. At his side, a beggar symbolizes the legendary generosity of Saint Martin who shared his coat one winter evening, a gesture engraved here in homage to his spiritual influence. Two symbolic animals, a rooster and a lion, frame the scene, symbolizing courage and divine protection respectively.
Decoration of the second side:
The second side illustrates Saint Maurice on horseback, carrying a standard and accompanied by a soldier holding a lance. This scene, surrounded by a snake and a lion, evokes the sacrifice of Saint Maurice and his fellow martyrs, recalling their refusal to fight Christians under the Roman Empire. All engravings honor the devotion and unwavering faith of the two saints.
State :
Note, a chip on the unscrewable pouring spout used for filling, and the absence of its small closing cap.
The wear of the details attests to its age and the daily use of this object, thus adding to its charm and historical value.
