Object description :

"Snuffbox Secouette Monoxyle Carved In Boxwood Object Of Curiosity XVIIIth"
Remarkable Secouette with circular belly for snuff, decorated with a scene of riders carved in a block of boxwood dated 1755. Superb patina of time due to long manipulations over several centuries, inevitably causing surface wear of the decoration.

Detail of the first decoration on the dated side: Representing St-Martin in uniform and on horseback brandishing his sword, surrounded by another character, a Rooster, a Lion, The date and the surname below the scene.

Let's talk a bit about the symbolism of this first side: the Rooster: in antiquity represented courage, intelligence, qualified as a solar lucky charm. the lion: is associated with Christ and is attributed many magical powers. the main scene of the horseman and the character at his side: According to the story the young Saint Martin under the pressure of his father, an officer in the Roman legions, had to follow him according to his assignments. Disappointed to see his son turn to the Catholic faith, he enlists him in the army. He entered the Emperor's army at the age of 15, when the legal age was 17. Son of a Veteran, St-Martin integrates as an Officer. The Young Man therefore has a Slave, but according to his Hagiographa he treats him like his own brother. According to the Opologue, one winter evening he cut his coat with his sword and shared it with a poor beggar in the cold. the following night, according to legend, Christ appeared to him in a dream wearing the mantle.

Detail of the decor on the other side: St-Morice also on horseback and in uniform, holding the Standard in his hand, surrounded by another character with a spear in his hand, a Serpent, a Lion also as on the other side and the surname of St-Morice below.

The symbolism of the 2nd side: the Serpent: for starters has always been associated with the idea of Life and Death. Leo: is associated with Christ and magical power as for the central scene St-Morice and his Roman military Companions all of Christian denominations: history says that they were all Martyred and Massacred in AUGAUNE at the end of the 3rd century on the orders of Emperor Maximin. For refusing to fight against Christians. They will all be put to death. Illustrating thus by their Glorious Passion the attachment to the Christian Church.
