Ukiyo-e print by Toshusai Sharaku This is Kabuki theater actor Tanimura Torazô as Washizuka Happeiji. It is a color woodcut on a dark mica ground, Oban format. This is plate 14 from the Sharaku folio port, vol.1 (Tokyo Adachi color printing studio, 1940). Sharaku, active from 1794 to 1795, is generally considered to be one of the great masters of Japanese prints. His work (145 prints) represents in a particularly lively and daring way the most famous Kabuki actors of his time. He realizes all of his work in the space of 10 months (a theatrical season) in Edo. His works were all published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the most important publisher of the time.
