ROLF HIRSCHLAND (1907 - 1972) Rolf Hirschland was born on February 16, 1907 in Hamburg and died on February 27, 1972 in Mantes-La-Jolie. Painter and draftsman, from a Jewish family of bankers, he was trained at the School of Fine Arts in Hamburg and then Berlin. He left Germany for France in 1928, and continued his training in the workshops of sculptors Despiau and Zadkine. His first major exhibition took place in Paris in 1934. He took refuge in Marseilles in 1939. From 1942, he hid throughout the war in the Alpes de Haute Provence to escape deportation. In 1945, his whole family was decimated in Auchwitz. Despoiled of his property, stateless, he no longer possesses anything. He left for the United States in 1947, and took advantage of this stay to sell several of his painted canvases at the MOMA in New York. He returned to France in 1948 and moved to Paris in the artistic city of La Ruche, in Montparnasse. Hard and passionate worker, in constant research, with various influences, but a style and a very personal touch, his work is classified in the current of expressionism, but his figurative painting was evolutionary with sources of inspiration passing through surrealist and cubist periods.
