"Chalice And Its Paten, Gilt Silver And Gilt Bronze. France Around 1930"
Chalice and its paten in gilt silver and gilt bronze (foot and shaft). Set executed by church silversmith Henry Nesme. The Chalice has a circular jumping foot surrounded by bead friezes and surmounted by a tubular stem fitted with a beaded toric knot supporting a solid false cup and a vermeil cup. The slope of the foot is decorated with a large stylized frieze in white metal representing grapes and wheat as a reminder on the false cut. A pattée cross is engraved on the foot. The paten is engraved with the monogram of Christ IHS, a lobed cross and shamrocks. Hallmarks Minerva 800/1000 on the cup and on the paten. Hallmarks Master Goldsmith: Henry Nesme ** Chalice is engraved with an inscription on the reverse. Height: 23.5 cm Feet diameter: 12.3 cm Paten Diameter: 13 cm Chalice weight: 491 gr gross Paten weight: 61 gr / In very good condition, without dents or scratches Minimal traces of use. Original transport box in good condition **The Nesme family dynasty is representative for silversmithing in Lyon in the 18th and 19th centuries and in particular for religious silversmithing.
