The face of the woman with birds is close in stylistics to Dan masks, Ivory Coast.
Valentine Henriette Prax (1897-1981) was trained at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers, married the French sculptor Ossip Zadkine whose marriage took place in 1920 with the Foujita couple as witnesses. With her husband, she frequented the avant-garde workshops of Montparnasse, where she discovered the Cubists and Fauves such as Picasso, Braque, Van Dogen, Cézanne, Apollinaire and Max Jacob.
The work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Collioure for the exhibition "Collioure, Babel des arts (1905-1945) and reproduced in the catalog of the exhibition.
